TAILORSHOP INFORMATION
___________________________________________________________________ General
info on the Tailorshop at Queen and Kent
Sandra found a platt which showed James's tailor shop to be one store off the
corner on Queen St. from Queen and Kent intersection. I am not sure if platt had
north marked. If it was north of the intersection, there is now a new building.
If South, the building may still remain. Hutchinson's
Prince Edward Island Directory for 1864, page 105 James
McLeod, merchant tailor; Queen near Kent. PEI Directory James
McLeod, Tailor at home on Upper Queen Street. 1892 Ad in
Guardian for McLeod & McKenzie Tailors
Jen's Speculation:
The interesting thing is that if you look at the "Islanders in Boston"
Section, below, is that James and some of his family, some of which were in
McKenzie's employ, as well as another person also in McKenzie's employ,
Johnstone, all came to Boston at the same time. We always thought that something
may have happened to McKenzie or that the tailor business wasn't as lucrative as
it had been due to the Industrial Revolution. The only downside to this theory
is that McKenzie's tailor shop continues to operate according to a 1922 PEI
Directory (Charlottetown) Exchange, and a J.T. Mckenzie is still said to operate
it (or at least the business still carries his name) at 174 Queen. It could be a
son, I suppose. Now notice the add below for MacLeod, John and Co. - Tailors,
who operated their business on 173 Kent. Remember how the ad for "McKenzie
and McLeod - Tailors" said the shop was on Queen and Kent? I'm thinking now
that A.) the shop split, or B) Sons of both continued to run the shop, as a
(John) McLeod and (J.T.) McKenzie are both still listed (as they were in
previous directories and ) in 1922 directories as having shops on the corners of
Queen and Kent. If anyone is going to PEI, please try and get some research into
this location, and some pictures. I've been told that 1 corner has new
buildings, but elsewhere, old buildings remain. Perhaps someone could help
figure this out? Another Theory is that McKenzie might be
in someway related to James... This hasn't panned out, but it's something to
look into. ___________________________________________________________________
INFO on Tailor of Interest. JOHN MCLEOD. Could he be the eldest son of James and
Ann Bolger? He had a tailorshop next door to where the McKenzie tailorshop had
been on Queen and Kent, and is also next door to where a J.T. McKenzie shop is
said to be operating according to the 1922 PEI Telephone Directory. 1922 and 1928 PEI Telephone Directory MacLeod,
John and Co. - Tailors, 173 Queen - 185-J AD for his shop appeared
in the PEI Herald in 1899. The store was located on Queen Street.

PEI CENSUS INFORMATION

Below is the lot map from the 1881 Census
I've marked lot 67 because it's been of some interest to me. It's where a large
amount of Scottish settlers are known to have settled. They had an anniversary celebration in which a (may not be ours) James McLeod and a J.T. McKenzie (owned
tailorshop with James) both of Charlottetown, attended.

GENERAL CENSUS
INFORMATION GIVEN BY PEI ARCHIVES Remember that 1841 and 1861
give only the name of the head of the household; 1861 is missing for a few
areas; and only a very few returns for 1871 have survived. 1881 and 1891 are
complete, and the Foundation has them completely indexed by now. _________________________________________________________________

NOTE: Ages can't all be correct. Some are said to be older then they should've
been at the time and others are older then their known older siblings. I
attribute it to a dad who just can't keep track of his kids ages... after all
they change! Also, James either didn't know his age or was denying his actual
age, as he listed himself as 50 on both the 1881 and 91 census and was said to
be 62 when he died in 1899.

History of St. Dunstan's Basilica in Charlottetown, PEI.
St. Dunstan's Basilica is built and is the fourth Roman Catholic church to
occupy this site since 1816. It is built of Miramichi freestone. In 1816 a small
wooden church was built on the present site. In 1863, a larger church was built
and replaced in 1896 by a stone cathedral. On March 7, 1913, fire destroyed the
church and St. Dunstan's Basilica was built during First World War. _________________________________________________________________
IGI Individual Record for James McLeod
We know for sure that James came from Scotland, but when?
The record below is not confirmed and should not in anyway be taken as
fact until confirmed. Minna MacLeod found this on familysearch.org. Basically,
we like this record because of the names John, Ann, and Gordon in the names of
James' children. It's from 1828 (which is close to what we had guessed).
Source: Parish Registers 1602-1854 Church of Scotland. Parish Church of
Inverness. (Microfilm of 0. Records "(Books OPR 98; Vols 1-5) in the New
Register House, Edinburgh. Published also in SLC, UTAH Archives too!

Note: If we go by the fact that the house in PEI was once called "Ardgour"
(acc. to McLean sale notice)- a region in Inverness (near Locke Linne), Scotland and we look at "this" James, then we
can say that "John," James' fathers name might have been used to name
James' first son from his first marriage to Ann Bolger. We can say the
same about choice family names such as "Gordon," and "Ann"
which were also children of James by his 2nd wife. Ernest James second wife
reportedly told Brad that her husbands family came from Invernesshire. Betty
Makela says his is from Edinburgh.

Note: This is a previously unknown child that was found when my dad and
his brothers and sisters went to PEI. It's my understanding and some
hearsay that there was an issue with the mother, Ann Bolger in that a.
They didn't get their daughter baptized right away, or that b. they did
get her baptized Presbyterian (James' Religion), but she blamed that, and
that's why the rest of their kids were baptized RC. James stayed Presbyterian. Mary Ann McLeod is buried in PEI

Daily Examiner, August 14, 1891 Sons of the Heather
Annual Gathering of the Clans - A fine day and a Large Gathering A
special train of seven coaches, laden with Sons of Heather and their friends,
with the Artillery Band of this city, left Charlottetown yesterday morning under
Conductor Macgowan. Crowds of passengers, East and west, came by the regular
trains; and the yeomanry of Prince County poured into Summerside by means of
horses and carriages. The Scottish Games went "bravely on' in the presence
of thousands of spectators. Despite thronging crowds the programme was begun,
continued and completed without a hitch. The greatest interest was shown in
"Ghillie Callum" and the pipe music. While Mr. Angus McLean, of this
city, was competing for the Piper's Prize, one of the women became inspired to
such a degree that she had to dance, and this being observed by one of the
gentlemen present, she was invited to take the platform when she "tripped
the light fantastic" to the mutual delight of herself and the audience. One
of the events of the day was the speed exhibitions by Mr. Brennan's colt
Parkside, Mr. Craswell's colt, Almont Wilkes, and W.W. McLeod's mare, Guinea....

Article found in PEI archives from 1882. I have a photocopy of original. We used
to think the Doctor mentioned could've been Harry McLeod, son of James and his
second wife, but if you do the math, he wouldn't have been old enough. However,
the John McLeod (a Tailor) mentioned could be the first son of James by his
first wife, Ann Bolger. I am 100 percent sure that THIS John (A tailor) and the
OTHER John McLeod (also a Tailor) I have researched are one in the same, but I
am still unsure if the TAILOR John and James' oldest SON John are the same. FOUND
DROWNED. 1882 Charlottetown Examiner The body of the man found
drowned in the Hillsborough on Thursday, is doubtless that of Thomas Millar, a
Scotch Farm laborer. Mr. John McLeod, tailor, Upper Queen Street, states that
from the description of the deceased's left hand, in the EXAMINER, and from the
description of his hair, and left eye, as given by the Coroner, Dr.
McLeod, he has no doubt on his mind that the body found is that of Thomas Millar.
Mr. McLeod also says that Millar was slightly deranged in mind from the effects
of a sunstroke he received some years ago and that he has since wandered a great
deal through the country. When last heard of he was working on a farm in Lot 48,
and when drowned must have been on his way to or from the city. The deceased was
known to have at times considerable money in his possession, but his corpse, with
the exception of one mark upon his throat, did not show any appearance of foul
play. We should be obliged to any person who can throw light on Millar's disappearance
to correspond with us. Back
